It's Been A Long Time!

I feel like I am crawling out of a cave after a long winter...except summer just ended and it's my studio I am emerging from.

This is one of the special pieces I worked on this summer for a very special person who loves her dog Nigel very much. Nigel took his journey over the rainbow bridge this spring and she wanted to have a piece made in his memory. We call it "Nigel in the Sky with Diamonds!"

Touch the Earth Gallery and Cat Mountain Station This Weekend

Touch the Earth is located at 3320 E Allen Rd, Tucson. This show will be on from 10am - 4pm. Green Things Nursery is across the way and having an art sale, too, so you can pick up a poinsettia and a garden stake by Dante on the way home!

Cat Mountain Station is located at 2740 S Kinney Rd, Tucson, AZ 85735 near Coyote Pause Restaurant. This show will be from 10am to 2 pm...there is a great curiosity shop here with wonderful treasures to be found!

Tucson Museum of Art Holiday Artisan Market

Again, more thanks to all of you who stopped by the Bungalow this weekend for the Open Studio Tour!

It is time for the Tucson Museum of Art Holiday Artisan Market. Molly Phoenix Glassworks has a new home at the show this year. I will be located to the left of the outdoor central cashier in the gated courtyard. If you are in my old space this means you will continue through the museum lobby straight back to the outdoor cashier and into the gated area on the LEFT. I have made a map of the Museum from above with Microsoft Paint so you can see the "OLD SPACE" and "NEW SPACE"...oh how I miss you Photoshop! It is space #24.

I am making a batch of winged hearts for the weekend and some new angels, too. If time permits I will also be making garden flowers from tea plates and punch bowl cups, these will be brand spankin' new and very cool IF I can find the time! If not they will be at the next show...Fiesta De Arte!

This weekend is Open Studio! I am excited about everyone getting to see the shelves of bottles and bobbles that go into my pieces. I still get giddy when I uncover little glass lovelies that inspire me, so I try to keep them visible so they do not fall back into the void before making it into a panel.

Second, I am really happy to announce the addition of two new events to my calendar! I have been invited to participate in the Holiday Arte Fiesta at the Art Studio of Noreen Dziat. This is on the northwest side of Tucson at 4802 W. Paseo de las Colinas Tucson, Az. I will also participate in the Fourth Ave Winter Street Fair. I will be located at Delectables on the Ave. I will be doing a "test run" on the new Delectables space this Sunday for the All Souls Procession. See the calendar to the right for more info.

Thanks to everyone who made the Trunk Show at Bohemia a blast! It was a real treat to have so many wonderful people stop by. I wish there was a way to say thank you that really means "Thank You!" I am such a lucky girl to have wonderful fans out there in the world.

TRUNK SHOW!

From what I have heard, many of the trunk shows around don't even have a trunk...I thought since I have been dragging mine all over the USA I might as well drag it into Bohemia this Sunday and have a Trunk Show with a trunk...now it has nothing to do with stained glass, but it will be fun to add to the collage that is happening inside the trunk.

I had always wanted a trunk, like any/every vintage clothing loving, bric-a-brac collecting, theatrical sewing bohemian would. At some point, around the turn of the century (the most recent one) I picked this thing up in Maine and have regretted it ever since. I mean, I have been thrilled about it! It is big and cumbersome and in need of new handles and the fact that I have began a decoupage project of all my favorite images on the inside has made it very difficult to part with. SO, on Sunday the 18th of October I will be hanging out at Bohemia, Mod Podge in one hand, photos in the other, adding to the inner walls of my trunk. I am looking forward to seeing familiar faces and meeting new people.

Stop by after brunch for an "afternoon cap"...we'll have Mimosa and coffee available while you browse Bohemia...

Each one is cleaned, patina'd and polished to a shine...by hand. Needless to say I am looking forward to a break. First a week in Phoenix and then a trip to the farm in Pennsylvania.

Can you believe how long it has been since last we...well communicated? I know how much I have missed you, my dear sweet blog, can you forgive me for being away for so long? I have been in the arms of another who goes by the name of "studio". A fiery creature with many distractions, many means to many ends and tiny windows that look upon her soul. Which, by the way, is often lit with the most fabulous sparks...NMH, Mr. Bird (aka the only reason to get a tangle in your hair) and Clem Snide...

More simply put, I have been rocking out in my studio making heaps and loads and scores of little pretties. I am SUCH a lucky girl. I may work every day and often times late into the evening but what else am I gonna do!!

Having just returned from a great business trip in Las Vegas I am knee deep in new accounts and daydreams. We were able to take some time to walk the casinos and see the sights. On the way to the Bellagio fountain we walked through Paris. Not real and still a delight for yours truly. Thank goodness for an active imagination! These little guys are time consuming but always a one of a kind. This one has mostly vintage bullseye faceted cabuchons in the swath at the top and a bird shaped purfume bottle.

The Summer Dress will also be at the big show with me, and hopefully future small shows, too. This one was made for a small street level apartment with tin ceilings on Portland's west side. I was inspired by a scrap of mirror I thought looked like a dress swaying in the ocean breeze...add a little beach glass bodice, some etched flowers and a handful of ruffles and you have a Summer Dress! The spaghetti straps are made out of guitar strings and the hanger is handmade, too.

I hung mine next to the front door so I could check if my earmuffs were straight before heading out into the snow...no worries about that in Tucson!

I have been slack on posting but not on working!
I have been busy preparing for a show in Viva Las Vegas! Last time I was there with The TeaBags and the cutest little couple who were remarried by Elvis in the same chapel they were married in the first time around!

I am looking forward to the event and have been gathering one of each of my new items, best sellers and favorites!

Here is a mirror I designed in 2005. I got tired of longingly looking at the pattern and finally made the leap! I am so glad I did. It only took 3 1/2 years!

This delicious new piece has a new home already, however, there are more on the way. This will always be a one of a kind, but the inspiration that was spawn by the freedom I experienced when working on this was amazing!

The original pattern had tucked in wings and a brown heart shaped bottle for the center. It seemed a little small for the size of the bottle and I decided to make the piece much larger to see if it would balance out. There was still something off about it. Making new patterns is no easy task, so I shelved the project for a spell. Trouble is it kept nagging me...every time I entered the studio I saw it and wanted to work on it, but the time commitment was too grand while I was preparing for a show. I could work on this giant piece or complete a slew of smaller works...the smaller works won and eventually I got to set my heart free. The process was like like making a bed with the finest linens available. The thing practically made itself. Once I was willing to part with the key feature, in reality a cool, but ugly heart shaped bottle acquired from a second hand store, everything fell into place...

This week has been devoted to getting ready for Locals at La Pilita . It is an artisans market that is happening during the Tucson Gem and Mineral show. Last week was devoted to gathering supplies for the year from the Gem and Mineral show. As one who rarely shops I found it overwhelming and fun for about 4 days.

I will post photos of my new work once they are polished and signed.

I learned that you should not autofill your ipod unless you weed out all the crap that you never listen to from itunes ahead of time. Don't get me wrong, I love me a little Prince and the New Power Generation and Polly Jean Harvey and Liz Phair are like old friends stopping by for a visit. Harry Connick Jr. belting out Danny Boy , however, is another story all together. I love the white pants in the winter time, but an Irish Folk song while I am trying to bust out mass amounts of Molly Phoenix Glass is just tragedacious.

Lesson learned. Now that I have remedied the problem I hope to torture the 'hood with my live rendition of Neutral Milk Hotels Aeroplane Over the Sea...

...and I got to see my pal Matt Hammer this week. Not to be mistaken with Captain Hammer. Shcucks.

Preperations

I really thought that after the new year things would chill out for a spell. I am so glad to be wrong. I am just as much of a busy bee. With all the pieces to work on I nearly passed on the opportunity to share the inauguration of Barack Obama with friends. I am glad I spent it with them. We had a champagne toast at 10am and said hello to our new First Family.

I returned home more inspired than when I left and for the first time in over 15 years I am moved to fly American flag. I have decided to name a series of pieces made with baroque glass to honor my brother from another mother "Baroque Obama" ...

I am so crushing on Andrew Bird. I love to whistle in the studio, or try to...I have preordered the deluxo version of Noble Beast and will count down the days until it arrives. The anticipation will kill me for sure.

Meanwhile, back at the ranch...I have yet to undertake the next big project of throwing up some shelves in the studio to put the bottles on. Once this is done I will have more space to rearrange and get some really good shui going on in there.

Admittedly I have been distracted over the last 24 hours on the "Flower Pen Project". I had a lot of pens left over from another project and needed to find a use for them. I got some very nice artificial flowers, glue and florist tape and made bouquets! Way more time consuming and fruitful than the previous evenings adventure into homemade ear candle project. Although that did birth the idea for something completely different, I do not think it is my calling.

The dogs and I took a long walk in the desert this afternoon to take in some quiet & sunshine.
Beyond Gates Pass there is a pull off that is my favorite. There is access to a riverbed and all the wonderful offerings there. It was nice to be outside. The Mainah in me tends to take to the indoors when the calendar hits October. I still get confused if I am not wearing a turtleneck wool sweater on Thanksgiving!

Tomorrow is a Banditas meeting followed by studiotime. There are some special projects that need executing.

I have been working the last 3 days on new patterns. It has been rainy and cold here in Tucson and I have been, literally, planted in front of the fireplace with a pile of pencils, colored pencils, erasers, eraser guards, sharpies(the retractable extra fine sharpie is my fave), the last few over-sized sheets of toothy water colour paper acquired at a tag sale for a song from a woman who would only let them go to some one she thought was going to use it artistically (I never told her I was a painter, just that I was an artist!), a 19" plastic ruler (if it was wooden it would have been thrown into the fire! Years of tapping along/make believe sword play has pocked the edge. feh.), NPR ( I am going to guess it is National Autism Awareness Month AND Nation Jazz Appreciation Month ) a pitcher of water, a bag of trail mix, 3 boxes of bottles, one giant box of old patterns and two dogs taking turns keeping me warm. I have an unimpressive pile that will not reflect the amount of work I have put in until I cut the glass for each one, then foiled, soldered, cleaned and polished, signed and bubble wrapped each one. For now I will just have to live with the tragic mess that is 99 new pieces ready for the next stage if I am...the O.C. in me wants to keep going until all the components in the house have patterns, it's just one more box...

I cannot believe how busy I am this season! The Banditas have really made a difference in my business. I have made huge strides with MPG since May. Thank you BABE!
It has been a great season so far and I appreciate all of you who come to visit in my booth at the various shows. The Tucson Museum of Art show was a blast and so many kind people stopping with bright eyes and bewonderment. Some carefully choosing just the right thing and others just stand back and say I want that. People are marvelous.

The Shop-A-Do is getting a lot of attention...think globally act locally! It is this Saturday from 11-5 and while it sounds like a short time frame there have been many hours put into making it awesome! We have distributed 3000 postcards and just try shutting me up about it! Good luck.

This week I have been working on Shop-A-Do almost non-stop. It is a labor of love and something I care about being successful. Between interviews, emails and mini-meetings I realized the perfect way to display my Clementines is in a Darling Clementine Crate! I can hardly wait to put it all together because I think the final product will be so cute/cool/eye catching.

Shop-A-Do is sneaking up fast and I anticipate it being successful. Look for coverage in the Weekly, the Arizona Daily Wildcat, Desert Leaf and Downtown Tucsonan. There will also be posters and post cards all over town. We are hoping to support KXCI in their anniversary celebration, as well.

All these, and more, found homes this weekend via the BBBS show. I even got to barter with a couple artists for some sweet gear that I will love and cherish for all time. The Banditas survived the 40 mph gusts of wind with help from each other and those around us. We had to pack up early to prevent loss of product, but because of this I was able to attend the All Souls Procession through downtown Tucson.

This is the Mask I made for All Souls Procession in Tucson this past Sunday evening. I used bass strings for the whiskers and black mesh to create a seeing portal under the nose. It was perfect for seeing through and I was only run over by a bus of loving hippies once! I was fortunate to be directly behind the band of bagpipes for most of the procession. Oh how I love bagpipes! Meow. I have been inspired by the gathering of people on 4th Ave and have yet to discover the effect it will have on my work...

New Birdcages

Another 12 hour day in the studio. I produced two Dragonfly Hearts, five Minikin Birdcages and one bottle panel. I also made a bunch of peace signs and repaired a couple rut rohs. The cool thing about the birdcages is that previously the bird was on a swing inside the cage. Now the bird is sitting on top of the open door!
There were a few distractions: my neighbor David, who is new to town and familiar with my work, came over to pick up a tag sale item. He had discovered Bohemia just two weeks before and was familiar with the bottle panels I make as well as Luon St. Pierre's work that graces my great room walls....Trader Joe's wheat free waffles for breakfast (unreasonably dry, even sopped in mascarpone and honey)...leftover Feast family meal food for lunch(even cold they beat the heck out of those waffles)...chocolate soy dessert for a snackie treat (tastes like cocoa puffs or count chocula, I forget which) and for dinner I have yet to look in the fridge.

Next week is going to be a fun one. It is Big Brothers Big Sisters Artisan Market. I am 100% sure everything will be fine and 100% sure I will be exhausted by Sunday evening when I plan on being in the all souls procession. I made a giant cat head for the occasion out of paper mache, I still need to paint it. At least I have my outfit picked out! Meow!
